Situational Altruism: Making Conditional Commitments

چکیده
Approaches to decision making that are based on individual rationality, whether relying upon classical game-theoretic notions or upon modern distributed artificial intelligence based concepts, are limited in their ability to characterize cooperative social behavior. Altruism, in particular, is a difficult concept to characterize with these approaches. In this paper we contrast categorical altruism (unconditionally modifying one’s utilities to accommodate the interests of another) and situational altruism (conditional modification of one’s utilities to accommodate the interests of another), where the conditioning is under the control of the one offering the accommodation.

The Institutional Critique of Effective Altruism
In recent years, the effective altruism movement has generated much discussion about the ways in which we can most effectively improve the lives of the global poor, and pursue other morally important goals. One of the most common criticisms of the movement is that it has unjustifiably neglected issues related to institutional change that could address the root causes of poverty, and instead foc...
متن کاملAltruism by age and social proximity
This study evaluates the extent to which an individual's stated altruistic sentiments can be influenced by context-most importantly, by the age and social proximity of the other person and by the nature of what is being sacrificed. We measure willingness to sacrifice own health for another person's health and willingness to sacrifice own wealth for another person's wealth. To evaluate these sen...

Trust is an important element of achieving secure collaboration that deals with human judgment and decision making. We consider trust as it arises in and influences people-driven service engagements. One, they consider only commitment as the primary means of estimating trust and omit additional signif...

There are three prominent solutions to the Darwinian problem of altruism, kin selection, reciprocal altruism, and trait group selection. Only one, reciprocal altruism, most commonly implemented in game theory as a TIT FOR TAT strategy, is not based on the principle of conditional association. On the contrary, TIT FOR TAT implements conditional altruism in the context of unconditionally determin...
متن کاملEvidence from an Experiment on Charity to Welfare Recipients: Reciprocity, Altruism and the Empathic Responsiveness Hypothesis*
This article investigates the determinants of generosity in an experiment on charity to real-life welfare recipients. It tests the effects of various measures of unconditional altruism and conditional or reciprocal altruism. The results show strong support for conditional or reciprocal altruism. However, people who are self-reported unconditional altruists make offers that are highly elastic wi...
